Senate President Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero in a press briefing today said that he is against passing legislation that aims to restrain one’s freedom of expression, following calls from House members and other advocates for laws against the spread of fake news.

Escudero stated that while he understands where calls are coming from to pass regulations on fake news, he says that any legislation should not prevent an individual’s freedom to express their opinions on issues concerning the country.

“Hindi dapat ito tumawid doon sa paglalapastangan sa Karapatan ng ating mga kababayan na malayang makapagsalita kaugnay sa kanilang nararamdaman at nasa isip, totoo man yon o hindi. Dahil pakiramdam at opinyon yon eh,” Escudero said.
